Note: Ranking starts beyond Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata, which undisputedly occupy the first, second and the third positions respectively

5 Gandhinagar 187 17 Diverse batch profile. No domicile reservations. Better rank quotient, more uniform batch. Established NLU, batch diversity due to women & NRI seats
6 Bhopal 122 22 One of the oldest NLUs. Slightly high-rank quotient => less uniform batch, lesser % of unreserved seats to total
7 Mumbai 122 6 Financial capital, Low-rank quotient => more uniform batch, high domicile reservations, batch diversity due to women & NRI seats

12 Cuttack 180 12 Higher unreserved seats, no state domicile, large batch without location benefit. No batch diversity
13 Guwahati 60 11 The rank quotient is the best among batch 2. Moderate-sized batch to place. Just 22% of state domicile impacts batch diversity
14 Patna 140 14 Location benefit (State capital) over others. 50% of the total seats for All India are unreserved. Slightly larger batch with a fairly high-rank coefficient. Established NLU
15-18 Vizag 138 12 <50% of total seats available for All India unreserved segment. Except for Vizag & Ranchi, others are less than 10 years old, without location advantage. Very high-rank coefficients mean student potential will largely vary within the batch. Except for Ranchi (State capital), no location advantage
Ranchi 140 10
Trichy 120 8
Nagpur 120 4

Note:

  1. NLU Delhi admits students through AILET, whereas we have referred to CLAT-specific data at several places in this blog. Hence, this institute is out of the scope of this discussion. All other national law universities accept CLAT scores, hence within the ranking scope
  2. NLU Shimla/Aurangabad/Jabalpur/Sonipat are in the initial years of operation. Hence we have not included them in this ranking
