Updated DU Admission Process Through CUET

The CUET 2024 exams are underway with lakhs of candidates staking their academic careers on it. Amongst the most sought-after colleges and universities offering admission through CUET is Delhi University. According to reports, more than 6.5 lakh students applied for a seat in DU last year and that number is only expected to rise further this year. With less than 70,000 seats, the competition is stiff, affording students no chance to commit mistakes in the DU admission process. 

Each candidate should be well-versed with the entire DU admission process – from eligibility and form filling to program selection and seat allotment. Candidates who fail to fulfil either the program-specific eligibility criteria or make any unforeseen errors during the admission process stand to lose their seat despite being on the merit list.

What is CSAS? 

The Common Seat Allocation System, or CSAS is an online admissions system used by Delhi University to assign seats to qualified students based on the basic eligibility criteria and their CUET scores. The portal has been designed to streamline the complicated admission process and make it more accessible for students living in far-flung regions of the country. 

The centralised system enables students to update their college and program preferences for all participating colleges from a single window remotely. Students need to register on the portal with the necessary documents, pay a one-time non-refundable registration fee, update their preferences, and participate in the online counselling process. 

The three phases of the DU admission process

The DU admission process has been divided into three parts – all conducted on the CSAS portal. 

1. Submitting the application form 

The first step is to register on the portal with all the relevant personal and academic details. Upon successful registration, a college application guide will be mailed to the students. The guide will direct candidates with clear instructions about their eligibility, documentation, and other necessary information. 

Students are needed to submit the following documents:

• Proof of age
• Photograph
• High school transcripts 
• Test scores

Many colleges also require SoPs and LoRs for specific courses. 

For General candidates, a one-time fee of Rs. 250 will be charged while candidates applying via reservation need to pay Rs. 100.

Once all these procedures are completed, a confirmation page will appear indicating the successful submission of the application. 

1. Selecting the right program according to preferences 

In the second phase, which will begin after the results of the CUET 2024 exam are declared, students need to fill out their preferred colleges and programs based on their CUET merit score. Students should pay attention to the options they are filling in because their admissions will entirely depend on what colleges and programs they select. 

1. Seat allotment and admission

In the third and last phase, colleges will review all the applications to create their shortlists. A computerised system will assign candidates to their preferred colleges based on the merit score and seat availability. 

The first round of admissions will be held in July and the second one in October. 

Post seat allocation process 

Once the seat has been allocated, the student needs to pay the fee before the deadline. If the student fails to do so within the deadline, their seat will lapse. 

The colleges will also manually verify all the documents at this stage to confirm eligibility. The provisional seat can also be nullified for many reasons including:

• Not accepting the offer and paying the fee within the deadline. 
• Submitting fraudulent, forged, or incorrect documents. 
• Not meeting the basic eligibility criteria of the course.

Important instructions to adhere to during the DU admission process 

There are a few standalone instructions that students should keep in mind, especially if they’re applying through the sports quota. 

• To be eligible for admission via the sports quota, students need to give a performance-based test, the results of which account for 50% of weightage in their merit score. 
• Students who have the same CUET merit score will be judged on the basis of the aggregate marks of their top three 12th boards subjects. The one with the higher score will be given preference. In case, the score is still tied, the older candidate will be alloted the seat. 
• Admission can only be withdrawn by the candidate before the spot round is announced. The student will be levied a charge of Rs. 1000 for the same. After the spot round starts, no student can cancel their admission. 

Students who do not qualify this year for their preferred program can choose to drop a year and reapply in 2025. With a year to prepare, they can focus on their weaker subjects, shore up their strengths, and ensure a good rank.
