GATE Aptitude Syllabus

The GATE General Aptitude subject is a common subject for all disciplines with a weightage of 15 marks. It is considered to be easy based on the past performance of candidates. GATE General Aptitude Marking Scheme

The marking scheme is as follows:
  1. There will be five questions for 1 mark and five questions for two marks each.
2. For every wrong answer, marks will be deducted
3. NAT questions do not have negative markings.
4. In MCQs of 1 mark each, 1/3rd marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer.
5. In MCQs of 2 marks each, a 2/3^rd mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.

Verbal Aptitude Syllabus

The verbal aptitude section of the GATE Aptitude Syllabus is intended to test the candidate’s knowledge of verbal and grammatical skills. However, the questions are presented as sentences, spotting errors, completing sentences, and reading comprehension questions. Furthermore, the topics in the verbal aptitude section of the general aptitude syllabus include vocabulary, tenses, articles, idioms, comprehension, reading, conjunctions, and adjectives. Besides, it also includes words and phrases, prepositions, narrative sequencing, verb-noun agreement, critical reasoning, and sentence completion.

Analytical Aptitude Syllabus

GATE Analytical Aptitude Syllabus assesses the candidate’s analytical and comprehensive knowledge. It also includes three chapters in this section that focus on the candidate’s analogical, logical, and reasoning abilities. Also, number relations and reasoning, analogy, logic-induction, and deduction are the topics covered in the analytical aptitude test.

Spatial Aptitude Syllabus

This section of the GATE 2025 General Aptitude syllabus is designed to check the candidates’ visualization and pattern recognition capabilities. Besides this section also has topics on shape transformation, including assembling, mirroring, rotation, scaling, translation, paper folding, 2-D and 3-D patterns, grouping, and paper cutting.

Numerical Aptitude Syllabus

The GATE Numerical Aptitude Syllabus concludes the GATE General Aptitude Syllabus but plays an important role in the test. There is a great deal of information available in this section like the previous year’s question papers and mock tests. It is therefore recommended that students practice this section by using previous year’s question papers and mock tests available online. Moreover, the topics covered in the section on numerical aptitude are geometry, elementary statistics and probability, data graphs, data interpretation, numerical reasoning, mensuration, and numerical computation and estimation.

Topic-wise weightage GATE Aptitude Syllabus

The GATE 2025 General Aptitude syllabus does not differ significantly from the syllabus for the previous year. But there is no change in the weighting of the General Aptitude test. However, the primary objective of the GATE Exam 2025 is to assess the candidate’s knowledge of core subjects. It consists of 55 questions with 85% weightage and ten questions on general aptitude topics will be included in the test. Those will be weighted at 15%. All disciplines share one aspect of the GATE examination.
