GATE Qualifying Marks 2025: Check Previous Years Qualifying GATE Marks

05 March, 2025
Radhika Joshi

To qualify for the GATE 2025 exam, candidates are required to obtain a minimum score that varies based on the category and paper they have appeared for. This qualifying score is a benchmark to determine the candidates’ eligibility for further selection processes. Therefore, it is important for the candidates to score at least the minimum marks specified for their respective category and paper to be considered for further evaluation. The minimum GATE qualifying marks or passing marks that students need to score vary every year. Continue reading to see what the expected GATE qualifying marks 2025 are. We’ve also added previous years’ GATE passing marks for reference.

What is the Difference Between GATE Qualifying Marks and Admission Cutoff?

The GATE passing marks for the year 2025 will be divided into two types: Qualifying Cutoff and Admission Cutoff. We have provided a table below to help candidates understand the difference between the two types.

Qualifying Cutoff Admission Cutoff
The conducting authority of GATE releases the qualifying cutoff, which is available on GOAPS. Each institution has its own admission cutoffs, which are posted separately on its official counselling portal, CCMT/COAPS.
To be eligible for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs, candidates must score at least the minimum marks specified as the eligibility cutoff. Institutions have a range of opening and closing ranks to select their candidates. These ranks are called admission cutoffs.
Admission is not guaranteed by achieving the qualifying cutoff marks. These marks only make a candidate eligible for admission. Although achieving the admission cutoff doesn’t guarantee admission, it increases the chances of getting in compared to only achieving the qualifying marks.
The authority in charge is responsible for releasing the qualifying cut-off. The institutions are responsible for setting their own admission cutoffs based on various factors.

While fluctuating each year, the GATE qualifying marks follow a similar pattern, with the most popular papers having the highest passing marks. Clearing the GATE qualifying marks benchmark is crucial to getting admission to any college. Without crossing the GATE passing marks threshold, no student can expect to sit for CCMT or COAP. However, do keep in mind that simply scoring more than the GATE qualifying marks will not guarantee admission or a PSU job. Admission cutoffs and PSU cutoffs are released separately.
